Roy's
condition is reported in several new articles that
reveal the seriousness of what has been happening for the
past several days. It is reported that initially Roy
almost died but was resuscitated during surgery and later
suffered a stroke. He also required a second surgery to
relieve pressure on his brain. He has also been on a life
support machine. A Reuters article reported, "Lynette
Chapelle, one of the stars of the Siegfried & Roy show,
said Horn has communicated with doctors and friends
despite being on heavy medication and in critical
condition from the neck wound. He communicates with his
eyes, squeezes hands and can make some sounds." The
article also reported that "Roy Horn of the 'Siegfried and
Roy' duo on Sunday signaled thumb's up after a second
surgery to relieve pressure on his brain" The Siegfried &
Roy show has also been reported to be officially cancelled
with it's cast being told that they should begin looking
for a new job.(10/6)

The impact of Roy's injury on the many Las Vegas shows
who make references to the Siegfried & Roy show or have
parodies of their routines in their show is discussed in a
Las Vegas Review-Journal article that reported, "Harrah's
comedy magician Mac King cut his closing segment, in which
he promises the audience he will change himself into a
white tiger and save them a ticket to see Siegfried & Roy.
…Monte Carlo resident magician Lance Burton trimmed two
Siegfried & Roy bits, including a skit in which one of his
signature fake doves kills a white tiger." To read the

was hired as a "magic coordinator" for the soap opera
"The Bold and the Beautiful." He created and taught magic
to actress Adrienne Frantz who plays Amber Moore Forrester

Derren Brown's
television and his Russian Roulette routine is
discussed in many different articles that look at the show
itself or the ramifications of the final piece. A BBC News
article reported, "The selection process took up more than
50 minutes of the hour-long programme, which could easily
have been something out of a 1980s Paul Daniels show. But
the final minutes made for riveting, extremely unnerving
viewing as the realisation dawned that this man really was
to put a gun with a live bullet to his head and fire.
Alarmingly real The fascination was, of course, whether
Brown would actually shoot his own brains out on
television." The article concluded, "…I doubt there will
be a more nail-biting few minutes on television this
year."(10/6)

The danger of magic to
magicians who are apparently risking their lives for
the art is the subject of a London Telegraph article that
reported, "Today, carving up assistants is outrageously
low grade, passe, boring. Nothing less than starving
oneself in a Perspex box, making wild animals vanish or
potentially shooting oneself in the head will do." Andrew
Eborn is quoted, "It is bringing a new look to the way
magic is presented… The old image of magicians as old men
with funny beards has gone out of the window. Paul Daniels
was a brilliant entertainer but this is a different
approach. It is making magic and magicians look cool
again. Magic is the new rock and roll." To read the Oct. 7

David Blaine's "Above
The Below" stunt will be completed in less than two
weeks is reported in a Newsday feature that reported,
"Today is the 30th day that the American magician has
spent starving himself - for reasons not entirely clear -
in a transparent box suspended over the south bank of the
River Thames in London." Harmony Korine who is directing
the Blaine documentary reacted to the reactions to Blaine
by pointing out, "I think it's just meant to be a guy in a

Roy's condition is still being kept a secret but the
amount of press his accident is generating is monumental.
Fans, friends and co-workers have dropped off flowers in
front of the S&R statue at the Mirage and hundreds held a
candlelight vigil outside the hospital on Sunday night. A
Las Vegas Review-Journal article reported, "The vigil for
Horn attracted many local magicians, including headliners
Lance Burton and Penn Jillette and magic pioneer Channing
Pollack. Horn's supporters collectively sang 'Amazing
Grace' and prayed for him." Mirage Resorts CEO Bobby
Baldwin said that Roy was able to moved his right arm and
right leg when asked by doctors. A Las Vegas Sun article
reported that "Dr. Stephen Miller, Horn's personal
physician, said the tiger's bite missed the major artery,
the carotid." There were also several stories about the
Mirage, who will lose tens of millions of dollars, because
of the show's closing and about the dangers of working
with wild animals. Roy's two brothers are now at his
bedside and a Reuters article quoted his brother Alfred,
"I've seen him today and I'm telling you, he is going to
make it." Many celebrities and magicians are also quoted
about the importance of Siegfried & Roy and how Las Vegas
will never be the same without them.(10/7)

Roy's
condition continues to be classified as "critical but
stable" while an Associated Press article described him
as, "A modern day Dr. Dolittle who called the cats his
children, Horn spent vast amounts of time, energy and
money on animals that have left millions of show-goers
here in awe since 1966." Neurosurgeon Derek Duke is quoted
about Roy's progress, "Mr. Horn's injury was extremely
severe, and it is all but miraculous that he is alive at
this time. …While we are very pleased with his progress,
Mr. Horn is in critical condition and it will be quite
some time before the extent of his recovery is known…
Every day that passes increases his chance for survival

The dangers being faced by magicians is the subject of
a New York Times article that focuses on the impact
Siegfried & Roy had on Las Vegas. The article reported
that, "The mauling of Mr. Horn and the shuttering of the
Siegfried & Roy show signal two major changes in Las
Vegas. One is the realization that beyond the dazzle and
slickness, illusion is only illusion up to a point: the
performers are indeed vulnerable to danger. The other is
the potential end of an era of family-based acts that were
ushered in with the debut of the pair's show in the early
1980's." Franz Harary is quoted "Siegfried & Roy changed
how people perceived wild animals… In the circus, tigers
were about danger. In their show, the tigers were cute and
adorable. People think, 'Look at those adorable kitties; I
want to have them in my own home.' At the Mirage, almost
every kid leaves with a stuffed white tiger." The article
also discusses the Siegfried & Roy, Rick Thomas, Penn &
Teller shows and quotes Ben Robinson, Tony Hassini, and
Penn Jillette. To read the Oct. 8 article by Neil Strauss

Derren Brown's Russian
Roulette television special that was viewed by around
3 million people is the subject of a number of articles
which claim that the bullets used were blanks, the real
shots were manufactured using special effects and that the
show was pre-taped. A Guardian article quoted a Channel 4
statement, "In making and broadcasting this programme,
Channel 4 was very mindful of its responsibility to ensure
the safety of all involved, and liaised with the Jersey
police in advance of filming there to ensure that no
offences were committed." Other articles concentrated

David Blaine and
Derren Brown are said, in a Western Mail article, to
"have redefined an industry and bought understated glamour
and intrigue back to magic." The article also commented,
"one thing's for sure - magic is back in business, as a
new breed of edgy magicians are redefining the image of
magic and making it big business once again." Also
reported is that "All in all, the USA has made magic a
billion-dollar slice of the entertainment industry pie in

Siegfried
began to talk about Roy and the accident yesterday
with some quotes in newspapers and a Larry King Live
appearance. Siegfried explained that Montecore, the tiger,
grabbed Roy by the arm and then Roy fell to the floor. The
tiger then grabbed Roy by the neck, as if he was a cub,
and dragged him backstage probably trying to protect him.
Siegfried added, "A tiger, when he grabs you, it's the
strength… He thinks it's another tiger, and another tiger
has [thick] skin like this, and the fur." Dr. Derek Duke
explained in a press conference that "While we are quite
pleased with his progress, Mr. Horn is in critical
condition, and it will be quite some time before the
extent of his recovery is known."(10/9)

Derren Brown responds
to the articles that accused him of faking the Russian
Roulette Routine, "As I've said, coming back after the
weekend and seeing this press question of was it real or
was it not real, I couldn't have hoped for a better
response, because for me, if it comes down to it, if it's
real then it was just reckless and if it's a hoax then
he's just a waste of time. Those aren't interesting
questions to me, but to actually have this question now,
was the whole thing real; was it not real; is it a hoax?
for me that is great, any magic performer in the country
would give their right arm." David Beckley explained in a

Siegfried's
media blitz about Roy's accident is described in a Las
Vegas Review-Journal article, "Before an appearance on
CNN's 'Larry King Live,' Fischbacher sat for separate
interviews at the duo's 'Jungle Palace' with CBS, NBC and
ABC as well as a pool of three print reporters." The
article also reported that "A longtime friend of the stars
told others in their close-knit circle of supporters that
on Monday night, hospital staffers removed a breathing aid
and that Horn's first words were to ask to see his dog."
Las Vegas Sun article reports about comments made by an
MGM Mirage spokesman, "He also said that a video made of
the performance is still in the possession of the Mirage.
No plans have been made to release any of its contents, he
said, and he was not aware of any agency asking to see the
video, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which
is investigating the accident." Michael Jackson weighed in
on the Roy accident by issuing a statement that is
reported in a Eurweb article, "Roy Horn is a special
person who brings joy to the world and has always brought
good feelings to my life. I am praying for his speedy
recovery, and my heartfelt feelings go out to his
family."(10/10)
